A Distressed High School Student Exhibits Quite A Few Alcohol-Related Issues, Gets Suspended From School, And Has To See The School Psychologist

Stephen was a fifteen year old high school sophomore who was displaying more than a few alcohol-related issues at school. As a result, the principal informed him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school therapist, before he would be permitted to come back to school.

Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to explain his school situation to his parents. His Mother and Father were "fairly conservative" and explained to Stephen that getting suspended from school was not an acceptable educational game plan. They told Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would likely be like a lead weight around his feet that could quite possibly hamper his educational aspirations for the remainder of his life. Moreover, Stephen's parents were extremely displeased that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his friends in the second.

It was plain to see that his parents were 100% in agreement with Stephen's principal and informed Stephen that he had better come to the realization that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school therapist. After his chat with his Mother and Father, Stephen in the end agreed to see Miss Pender the next school day. So Stephen phoned the school and scheduled an appointment to see Miss Pender the next morning.

When Stephen got to his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she instantaneously analyzed all of the alcohol-related difficulties Stephen had gotten into and asked him if he knew why his recent alcohol-related behavior was such a cause for concern.

Quite candidly, Stephen was unsure why the principal suggested that he see a school psychologist. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional therapist about his drinking activities? Because nearly all of his friends drink the same amount that he does, in essence, drinking is no big thing. Stated more forcefully, if almost everyone is drinking, why is this such a big thing?

In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was starting to foil his ability to function as an accountable young man. As verbalized by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your friends drink hard liquor, wine, beer, or wine coolers does not mean that it's the best thing to do for you."

Fortunately, Miss Pender was extremely well equipped for her appointment with Stephen. She showed him reports and research studies she had highlighted that outlined various drinking statistics and facts that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen quite a bit of data that applied mainly to adolescents.

After Miss Pender went over the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse statistics and facts, it was evident that what Miss Pender taught Stephen was a real shock to him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to put in plain words the short term and the long term outcomes of alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency, but she also took the time to substantiate what she was saying with alcoholism and alcohol abuse facts and statistics that related to everybody in general, and mainly to teens.

Without a doubt, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen instantaneously grasped why he should not be engaging in abusive and excessive drinking with or without his peers any longer. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the information she discussed and then accepted her reinstatement into school.
