Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most financially challenged private high school in the region. Although she had been teaching for only one year, she had already acquired a reputation as an educator with teaching approaches that encouraged and inspired the students in her class to learn and to think.
For instance, one Thursday afternoon she addressed her students and announced the following: "For the next few days we are going to learn about some commonplace alcoholism signs from a general viewpoint and we are also going to learn about some of the most typical signs of alcoholism from a more specific point of view."
"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely prove that someone with a drinking problem is an alcohol dependent person, but the more signs that a person exhibits, the higher the probability that she or he is a person who is addicted to alcohol."
Miss Jackson then explained to the class that each student would be accountable for examining two alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her findings to the rest of the class via a fifteen minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcohol addiction signs that were presented and discussed in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked her students to study the list and rank the top nine alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcohol addiction. After approximately five minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and explained to the students in her class that after she reviews the results, she will reveal her findings the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked her students to look over the data on the sheet of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, issues, or questions. Within 30 or 40 seconds, almost everyone in the classroom raised his or her hand. It was evident that the students had some questions, concerns, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism professionals. For example, almost every student disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, that is, "Do you feel exceedingly ill when you stop drinking?"
Miss Jackson then explained to the pupils in her class why this answer was the most straightforward sign of alcoholism. She underscored the fact that the basic difference between alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.
In effect this means that when an alcohol dependent person suddenly quits drinking, he or she will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the students started to appreciate the main difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.
A few minutes later the bell rang, meaning that the end of class had arrived. Based on the enthusiasm manifested by the students when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson knew that she had inspired and encouraged the pupils in her class to stop and think about a vital health issue and social problem that exists in our country.
