A Ninth Grade Male Student Drinks Excessively With His Friends, Almost Dies From Alcohol Poisoning, And Learns That Learning Something In Class Can Make A Difference

Andy was a high school freshman who typically seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had a risk taking personality and generally wanted to do what his older brothers were doing for fun. The main difficulty with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were for than reason able from a legal standpoint to drive a car and to drink alcohol.

Andy, then again, had a rough time figuring out that as a fifteen-year-old person he should not be drinking. In fact, in spite of this, Andy normally drank with his guy friends after school, predominantly on the weekends.

One weekend, Andy decided to drive around with some of his older pals. One of his pals was old enough to purchase alcohol. After purchasing some wine, beer, and wine coolers, Andy and all of his pals went to a public recreational area and drank for approximately three hours.

After drinking approximately nine wine coolers, Andy started to feel woozy and then vomited. When he passed out near the outdoor swimming pool, one of his drinking friends called 911 for immediate medical assistance. It was fortunate that the call for medical assistance was made because when his cronies went to the hospital to see Andy, they were told that Andy had been suffering from alcohol poisoning symptoms. In short, Andy had experienced an alcohol overdose.

After getting alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was frankly flabbergasted to discover that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had about five or ten alcoholic beverages. When he stated this to the attending healthcare professional at the hospital, however, the doctor notified Andy that drinking five or ten wine coolers over a two or three hour period of time could in fact be substantially more alcohol than can be metabolized by the body. The healthcare professional further expressed how too much alcohol can cause the brain to shut down a person's breathing and that when this transpires, a person can cease to exist.

This was the first signal to Andy that he was drinking in a risky fashion and that there are costs for such behavior. The doctor told Andy that he was a fortunate individual because he almost died from an alcohol overdose the night before.

The healthcare practitioner also had a word with Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol rehabilitation for Andy. His parents were relieved that Andy was safe and notified the healthcare professional that they would follow through on getting Andy alcohol treatment.

While talking to his parents, Andy notified them that there must be a special reason why he did not perish and that he felt a sense of thankfulness that he was still alive. He also told his parents that the weirdest part about the entire drinking event was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning last week in health class at school.

At the time, what his health teacher, Mr. Johnson, was articulating didn't seem to make a lot of sense to Andy. Since he almost died, on the other hand, he felt that he should have listened more alertly in Mr. Johnson's health class and applied what he had learned to his personal life.

Andy notified his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to school and make an apology to Mr. Johnson for not displaying more attention to a topic that was as important as learning about alcohol poisoning.
