Nearly three months ago I had breakfast with a forty-nine-year-old male named Benjamin who experiences acute depression, has relationship issues, and who is alcohol and drug dependent. As explained by Benjamin, it is his alcoholism and drug addiction and his acute depression that has had the most to do with his endless relationship difficulties.

As affirmed by Benjamin, he is so crushed by his relationship problems and by both of his medical conditions that he basically has little or no reason to achieve much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to finish four semesters of graduate school in sports history.

Benjamin's condition makes me wonder if he is an illustration of an individual who can look within and see his chemical dependency and drinking problems and do something meaningful about these difficulties. Or, to the contrary, if he a person who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets drug and alcohol rehabilitation that results in lasting recovery.

It may be asked how rehab would help his drug and alcohol dependency. First of all, there are more than a few recently created physician-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse, help him through the drug and alcohol detox process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in counseling he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to admit the fact that there is utterly nothing helpful about drug addiction and excessive and abusive drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy situations is the map to a premature death, poor work and school performance, financial difficulties, legal problems, deteriorating health, and shattered relationships. Fourth, therapy for his relationship problems and his depression might help him cope with these psychological issues more effectively and possibly create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in therapy he could also learn more about the different symptoms of alcoholism that he has manifested.

Because Benjamin doesn't have the resolve to carry out much of anything in his life, it is evident that he definitely needs a little hope for a more productive lifestyle. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is almost everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the counseling he requires for his severe depression and alcohol addiction and drug dependence and continue with his treatment program.

Benjamin is simply too young to be dejected in life. He doesn't realize this at the moment but if he can learn how to abstain from drugs and alcohol via alcohol and drug rehabilitation and get the counseling he needs for his intense depression, he can reorient his life and begin living with direction, self-respect, and passion.

More solid relationships, a wonderful life, self respect, and beneficial change are clearly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can become motivated to obtain the professional rehab he requires, follow through with his therapy regimen, live his life in an addiction-free and healthy manner, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about life.
