It took more than a few years but Sarah eventually made up her mind that she had it with her husband's excessive and hazardous drinking. She was worn-out from seeing Keith come home in the early hours of the morning from drinking instead of spending quality time with the family. She was also tired of the third DWI Keith recently got. Additionally she was exhausted from manufacturing justifications for her spouse when he couldn't make it to his job due to his abusive drinking.

In a similar manner, she was worried about the fact that their relationship was going downhill due to Keith's careless and hazardous drinking. And finally she was worn-out from the uncertain financial predicament into which he had put his family due to his careless drinking behavior.

One Wednesday morning when Sarah was pondering what she could do about her husband's careless and hazardous drinking, she got to the point that she frankly had to do something constructive to cut into the destructive cycle of Keith's excessive and hazardous drinking behavior. So Sarah looked in the yellow pages under "alcohol treatment" and discovered scores of rehabilitation centers that were all located less than 15 miles away from where she and her husband lived.

When Sarah called each rehab facility she introduced herself and stated that Keith, her spouse, was exhibiting careless and hazardous drinking behavior. She also stated that her spouse had a top-rate health insurance program at his place of employment and that outpatient or residential alcohol treatment would be covered if a health care practitioner in the company health network suggested the rehab.

After listening to Sarah go over her husband's excessive and hazardous drinking, the psychologist in a compassionate but firm way told Sarah how she more likely than not played a part in her husband's unhealthy and excessive drinking through the years. How? Mainly by justifying his behavior rather than letting him experience the results of his careless and hazardous drinking behavior.

Stated another way, the physician told Sarah that she may have been accidentally enabling Keith's excessive and hazardous drinking behavior. The therapist also underscored the point that Sarah would not be able to control her spouse's behavior. With the guidance and encouragement of the rehab team at the treatment clinic, however, she would not only be able to learn how to avoid contributing to Keith's careless and hazardous drinking but she would also be able to learn how to motivate him to make an appointment at the rehab center so that he could talk about his excessive and hazardous drinking behavior with a therapist.

The good news was that after Sarah revealed this to Keith and he saw that she was not joking, he told her that he had been quite apprehensive about his excessive and hazardous drinking behavior and that he was quite pleased to hear that Sarah wanted to do something positive about his careless and hazardous drinking behavior. Consequently, he scheduled an appointment to see a psychologist at the local alcohol rehab facility.

While simply calling a rehab facility does not ensure that a person's careless and hazardous drinking behavior will become less problematic or that an individual will automatically be more receptive to learning about alcohol abuse facts, scheduling an appointment is evidently an essential component in the treatment process. And since Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting rehabilitation for his excessive and careless drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the probability for a successful recovery was substantially enhanced.
